Sauna, Pool & Jacuzzi Electrical Work
Water and electricity require expertise, precision, and strict adherence to safety regulations. ACS Electrical Contractors provides specialized electrical services for saunas, pools, and jacuzzis, ensuring your installation is safe, code-compliant, and built to last.
Overview
What separates this work from the rest of residential electrical is that the National Electrical Code dedicates an entire article to it. Article 680 treats pools, spas, hot tubs, fountains, and saunas as a single high-risk category because water and electricity fail in lethal ways specifically through step-and-touch potential and ground faults that a body in a wet environment cannot tolerate. Every part of the install is spelled out: equipotential bonding grids, GFCI protection, clearances from fixtures to the water edge, dedicated circuits, and disconnect placement within sight but outside the splash zone.
For a typical hot tub, that translates to a 50- or 60-amp 240-volt circuit, a GFCI-protected disconnect mounted within sight of the tub but at least five feet from the water, and bonding jumpers connecting the heater, pump, blower, and every piece of metal around the tub to a common equipotential reference. Saunas run a dedicated 240-volt circuit to a control outside the hot room, with high-temperature-rated conductors feeding the heater inside. In-ground pools add underwater luminaires, pump disconnects, and an 8-gauge solid copper bonding grid buried around the shell that most homeowners never see but every AHJ inspects.
Article 680, Done by the Book
For hot tubs and spas, we size the circuit against the manufacturer nameplate, install the GFCI disconnect within sight and outside the clearance zone, wire the whip to the equipment compartment, and bond every metal part of the install per NEC 680.26. Where a deck or concrete pad is still being built, we coordinate with the carpenter or mason so the conduit and bonding conductor are in the ground before pour day. For above-ground tubs landing on an existing deck, we route conduit cleanly and pull the permit most retailers do not mention at the point of sale.
For pools, we install the equipotential bonding grid around the shell, land underwater luminaires on a dedicated low-voltage transformer or a GFCI-protected line-voltage circuit, wire the pump to a disconnect within sight, and provide the service or subpanel for any pool-house or accessory loads. For saunas, we run the dedicated 240-volt feeder, mount the control and over-temperature cutoff outside the hot room, and use high-temperature-rated conductors for the last run into the heater box where standard THHN will not hold up.

Serving the Lewiston-Auburn Area
Saunas and hot tubs are a common add-on at camps and lake houses around Casco, Raymond, Naples, and the Range Ponds a deck extension with a built-in Jacuzzi, a sauna off the back of a cabin, a swim spa on a concrete pad next to the water. The electrical work on these installs is genuinely unforgiving: inspectors check bonding and GFCI placement every time, and insurance carriers pay close attention to whether the permit was pulled. In-ground pools concentrate in the higher-density residential pockets of Falmouth, Cumberland, and Yarmouth, where we are called in by the pool contractor for the service, the bonding grid, and the underwater lighting. As a licensed Maine electrical contractor handling pool, spa, and sauna work across Cumberland, Androscoggin, and the Sebago lakes country for more than two decades, we do this by the book and carry the permit every time.
